getting hyper

Monday, May 19, 2008

Well, here we are again...it's officially been over two years since we all graduated from good old CU. I won't recap what has happened in my life over the last year, but I will say that it went by way too quickly. Right now I am in the middle of studying for the USMLE (like I know some of the rest of you are) and I can scarcely believe that two years of medical school are done. In a few weeks I'll be starting rotation at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. I chose to start on surgery...I suppose it's sucide waiting to happen. I also recently signed a lease on a nice apartment in Biscayne bay. If anyone is ever in Miami and needs a place to stay temporarily...let me know.

Well.. I need to get back to renal pathology and all the wonders of Wilms Tumor and RCC... happy studies, work, and life to all my fellow alums.

So, tomorrow (not my date but by day of week) is one year since most of us became Clarkson Alums. Personally, I can't believe al that has happened in this past year. From an outsider my life has taken exactly the turns that may have been predicted after I recieved my degree last may. I ran the marathon I had been training for all second semester. I headed off to medical school. I studied. I learned. Now I have four weeks to go and I'll be an M2.

Yet, what has happened in the last year is so much greater than this scheme. For one, I'm living in South Florida, in Boca Raton none the less, a place vastly different in culture and climate than Potsdam, or Milwaukee as I had orginally suspected. Second, this past year has been a rollercoaster of religious thinking. I have started to read scriptures more intently, and have been exposed to many protestant ideas. I have been alivened by some, confused by others, and overall reassured that the Catholic faith is where it's at. I've also suffered a long and very painful (physically and emotionally) recovery from training for the Disney Marathon and Plantar's Fascitis. Also regarding Disney, I managed to raise $2,500 + dollars to for Leukemia and Lymphoma research--> this was very hard.

Medical school also is not to be compared with the teaching acquired at Clarkson. I know, though I certaintly can't call to name, all the muscles in the body. I have held a human heart in my hands as well as cut apart a human brain. I can take a BP, a pulse, do the a basic physical exam and am currently learning to identify the murmurs of Aortic stenosis, Mitral stenosis, Aortic regurge, and mitral regurge by auscultation.

No...I'm not trying to be hauty by saying what I have acomplished in this year. Yes...I am trying to say that this year has been amazing! Life itself is amazing. Praise be to God!

To my classmates....perhaps y'all could share your experiences over the last year. I'm sure you all have great stories to tell.

P.S. I did use the word "Y'all" above. It has become part of my vocabulary thanks to an M2 here and his wonderful wife from Tennessee.

P.S.S. Aparently everyone hear thinks I say the word "bag" oddly...Imagine that ;-)

To all my fellow HP 101, Clarkson Class of 2006 alums....

Please help me raise money to fight Leukemia, Lymphoma and other cancers of the blood. I recently joined the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training program. Through the program I have made a commitment to train to run the Walt Disney World Marathon on January 7th, 2007 and in doing so raise $2,300 in sponsership funds. In particular I am running in honor of a 4 year old girl named Ainesly Erb who suffers from acute lymphocytic leukemia. Please help me raise funds to help Ainesly and others who suffer from blood cancers.

You can donate by going to my donation site or by contacting me directly.

My site is:

Thank you in advance for your assistance. Please feel free to tell others about this cause and send them my link.

Together let us fight cancer.....One Mile at a Time :-)

Somehow I had a feeling my comment would have a response. What I find interesting is how one class that required blogging has left a signfigant mark on the world of cyberspace. Small though it may be, there are a few students in our class who now maintain blogs, which may have not been the case without HP101. So in a sense our prof. may have known what he was up to all along ;-)
